From "NASA's mea culpa"

***
During an interview Tuesday with USA Today's editorial board, Griffin admitted the shuttle and station were mistakes that have cost taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars.

Only now, with NASA aiming for a return to the moon by 2018, are things headed in the right direction, he said.

Griffin made similar comments in Senate testimony early this year. But that was before Katrina significantly worsened the fiscal climate on Capital Hill, with some members wasting no time to say NASA's costly moon plan should be killed.

It's not hard for lawmakers to make a case to shut down the shuttle and station programs now, and move on.

The shuttles remain grounded and may not fly again until late next year. Even then, only a few station-assembly flights are likely to occur before the fleet is retired in 2010.
