I haven't read a lot of Vonnegut beyond his best known stuff. I will hopefully get to "Player Piano" in the future.
You are taking a more thoughtful look at the genre than the "puff piece" linked by Jody. It seems to be directed to more modern media SF and is not that accurate imo.
If she had included the entire scope of SF, she would realize that the "everyman" has always been common and the "competent" hero remains ubiquitous.
