Unfortunate facts
Researchers pumped air out to create a near vacuum, then added a carbon-dioxide atmosphere and cooled the chamber to zero degrees Celsius to 25 degrees below zero.
Good start, but Mars' AVERAGE temperature is -60 C. I wonder why they didn't try this temperature?
The freezing points for the mixtures drop to minus 21 degrees Celsius for water containing sodium chloride and 50 degrees below zero for calcium chloride, according to a university news release.
Oh, that's why.
of course you can make water flow under "mars-like conditions" if you cheat with the temperature.
What is much more interesting is that concentrated sulphuric acid solkutions have a eutectic point (lowest freezing point) of -73 C. Therefore, Battery Acid can flow on Mars, but you wouldn't want to meet any. As the Meridiani (Opportunity) site shows, acid that strong will attack rock and convert it to sulphates.
Based on observations at the Spanish Rio Tinto, specialised forms of life might be able to survive in just such a fluid, deep underground, so long as there was plenty of ice to keep the acid from reacting with rock and becoming less strong - then freezing.
Mars is a much more interesting planet in its own reality, than through blue-tinted spectacles, INHO.
