He's probably been advised by his think tank consultants that reoncilliatory language and "personal whipping" will sell to the moderates which sided with the liberals.
He's wasting his time with the left who would sooner destroy the man in effigy than say a positive word about him. And for the right the reaction will be much like yours. However his consultants will point out these votes are still secure even if he does his little soul-searching reach out act for the moderates.
California is a demographic disaster for a conservative. So he is cultivating and "pumping up" his touchy-feely, socially moderate, "I'm married to a Kennedy so I'm not as evil as Bush" routine.
Whether it works is another story. The far left will certainly not let up on him and whether he make them overplay their hands enough to win back more moderates is a risky gamble. They will just use it as an opportunity to say "He was wrong we are right" - when nothing could be further from the truth.
He should lock and load and kick out the windshield so he gets a clearer shot at the union leaders and State Assembly, cause he got a Raw Deal.
