My e-mail to George Will
I enjoyed George Will's column so much, I had to drop him a line. Here's what I sent to him:
Dear Mr. Will,
So-called conservative hot talk radio talk show hosts would likley brand me as a "tax and spend liberal." Indeed, I've been a progressive Democrat since I inherited the right to vote. But I must say that I most dearly loved your column in Thursday's Washington Post ("Grand Old Spenders").
The irony of the situation shouldn't be missed. Bill Clinton, who many of these same talk show hosts would also brand a "liberal," somehow managed to curtail the growth of government and balance the budget. Meanwhile George Bush and his Republican coleagues in Congress have sent expenditures soaring and have left our children the legacy of the largest deficit in history.
Nor should it be lost on anyone that the reputed forces of limited government are precisely the same forces that feverishly brought a President back to work from vacation to sign a law that allowed the federal government to intrude in to a very private and personal family dispute (Schindler vs Schiavo). Yet this same President stayed on the links improving his handicap in Arizona while one of the largest hurricanes in modern history slammed into the Gulf Coast.
The arrogance and hypocrisy of the American right is almost breathtaking. Almost as breathtaking as the naivete and incoherence of the American left.
Now this "tax and spend liberal" may support Medicaid and large public works projects that create local jobs, but at least I do believe we have to back our spending up with an equivalent amount of revenue - in otherwords, balance the budget. And, yes I do believe our government has no business teaching our children creation myths in public schools and shoving the Ten Commandments down our throats whenever we visit our local courthouse to pay our property taxes. I'd rather read the contents of Moses' tablets in the privacy of my own home if you please.
So thank you George. Your column clearly illustrates that a hardline conservative like you and a tax and spend liberal like me might actually find common ground.
Regards,
Donald
