Drug testing our government leaders

Was listening to a local talk show host named Charles Goyette today and he had an interesting topic this morning. He seems to think, based on the really bizarre things coming out of the mouths of people like Bush and Cheney, that it might be the result of the drugs they're ingesting. It wouldn't be a stretch to believe that Cheney, who more than likely is on numerous medications to keep his ticker pumping, might be under side-effects of the drug interactions. It'd probably be reassuring to believe that Bush's inability to put together a coherent sentence and his admission that much of his policy is dictated directly from God is the result of drugs and not simply miswiring.

Anyway, Goyette went on to say that our government seems to think it appropriate to drug test professional athletes that have no power over us so wouldn't it make sense to have our leaders pee in a cup once a month.

At first glance it seemed a reasonable thing for the public to know. Then it dawned on me. One of the problems with drug testing is that is disproportionally finds pot smokers since THC seems to have this nasty habit of lingering a very long time in one's system. Often the really nasty drugs dissipate quickly and the morons only get caught if they're stoned during the testing process. Once I thought more about it, maybe it'd be better if we required our federal government workers to all smoke a doobie after each day's work. The people I know that do that (including some very conservative folks) seem to be much easier to get along with than the people that don't. Somehow I can't imagine someone that lights up from time to time coming to the conclusion that torture is a viable American value.
