I thought the Tim Burton "remake" was awful and unnecessary. The 1968 POTA was a true classic that needed no "updating". The only thing the Burton version had over it was better primate makeup, but they forgot good writing and coherent plot in the process, like so many films made today.
Despite its flaws, the 1970 sequel Beneath the Planet of the Apes was also quite good and gripping in its day (ugly, crazy mutants worshipping a nuclear bomb under the ruins of NYC - how cool is that?! And a non-happy ending? Oh my!). I even liked the other films in the series, though their quality definitely began to decline.
Still, I know if they tried to do them today it would not equal what filmmakers were doing with SF films in the pre-Star Wars era. There were some real classics with substance and actual thought provocation before the FX laden turn off your brain blockbusters came along.
