Our geek tree...

..is on the street next to the mailbox. It's a nice, fairly symmetrical pine, about twenty feet tall. The geeky part is that it has four timers controlling four colors of lights. Each color is eight hundred mini lights. These are set in the following order:

Red: on at five
Green: on at six
Blue: on at seven
White: on at eight
Red: off at nine
Green: off at ten
Blue: off at eleven
White: off at midnight.

So for the evening, the tree tells the hour, if you know the sequence. I like say it blinks... only very, very slowly. The first year we had it set up this way, we had several neighbors mention that they thought they were going crazy...they went to dinner and it was one combination and upon returning home, it was another. It's been up for a couple of years now. We'll light up the red-white-blue combo on July 4th. On Saint Patrick's we'll light up the green. The bulbs are getting rather beat up and losing their color. Bird's peck at 'em. I was intending to re do them, and the weather was perfect in early November, but I didn't get 'round to it. Now it's freezing here (below zero the last couple o' nights) and that project will have to wait till next year. Maybe I'll strip the old lights out in the spring after St. Paddy's, that'll force me to re-do it in the autumn.

There is another tree out front that I've been intending to make into a thermometer with several thermostats. Greenhouse supply companies have all sorts of adjustable thermostats for both above and below temp settings. So I could set up the same thing with certain colors on at certain temperature ranges. Using big bulbs, maybe.
