You actually make a fair point generally, except that in this case ALL of those 'middle eastern types' targeted were peaceful ordinary citizens, for instance women being bashed etc. If it were really a matter of self-defence then 'white' gangs would be taking on the Lebanese gangs themselves, which everyone knows really are violent scum in Sydney, and who do deserve a real thrashing, I don't mind saying. But notice this is not what happened.

These lumpen yobbos were just utter racist drunkards out for blind revenge, and beating up on weak, defenceless and racially profiled targets. To hell with them and I hope the cops smash them if they try the same cowardly crap again this weekend (which is rumoured).
