re: Geologists witness 'ocean birth'

Well, it's not "new" in geological terms, the Danakil depression in the afar desert has been rifting for several million years, in competition to the main Red Sea rift. It seems to be losing the race and may eventually be abandoned, but there's also the issue of the East African rift system which may yet (5-10 million years) split off the eastern african region from the mainland, and link back up to Danakil.

A spectacular event at human scale* in the evolution of the rift at geological scale*. Danakil and Iceland are the only places where a thoroughgoing rift system is exposed onshore for such close scrutiny. In the rest of the world, one has to use submarines and sonar to explore the rifts.

* How many 8m * 60 km rifts did it take to form the Atlantic ocean?
