Space/Science

The big ten space events of 2005.

It's time.

So here goes, starting from 10; my list.

(10) Shuttle returns to space. [big disappointment]

(9) Gravity-Probe B successfully completes its science mission.

(8) New Mexico spaceport acquired by Sir Richard Branson for
"Virgin Galactic" suborbital space tourism launches.

(7) Launch of Venus Express.

(6) MER rover, Spirit, reaches top of Husband Hill.

(5) Hayabusa does achieve some good science and engineering objectives
on and off a small asteroid.

(4) Discovery of a 'planet' beyond Pluto's orbit [accompanied by a moon] orbiting our Solar System.

(3) Discovery of a "super-Earth" of at least 7-8 Earth masses orbiting
another star.

(2) Mars Express MARSIS radar acquires the first useful 3-dimensional
subsurface martian data.

(1) Cassini/Huygens achievements around Saturn and on Titan, starting
with a successful January landing on Titan by Huygens, landing on a confirmed moist or wet surface....and topped of with the astonishing
and historical discovery of active, explosively sublimating liquid-water vulcanism on the tiny moon, Enceladus.

What will the new year bring?
