re: Except it won't be free

"From everything that I've seen, you'll have to pay some sort of licensing fees on Galileo equipment."

"GPS is a military-run programme; its signals can be degraded or switched off. Yes, the service is free, but its continuity and quality come with no guarantees - which means it cannot be relied upon, certainly not for safety-of-life applications such as landing planes and controlling trains.

Galileo will be a civil system. It will be run by a private consortium and will offer guaranteed levels of service. "

"Users will also benefit enormously from the agreement between Europe and the US to make their sat-nav systems compatible and "interoperable". That is, future receivers will be able to get a fix using satellites from either constellation."

....

"NAVIGATION Open Access This will be 'free to air' and for use by the mass market; Simple timing and positioning down to 1m "

I've not seen any mention of the costs you specify. If you dont like whatever costs there may be ( perhaps a licence levied on every device of a few euros ) then dont get a Galileo compatable handset. I cant see why you have a problem with it. If an airline you elect to use gets some Galileo hardware, whatever its cost it'll be a drop in the ocean compared to the maintainance costs of an airliner, it's not going to double your ticket price- and reading what facts I can find, future hardware will simply include Galileo, GPS and Russian reception into every new unit.

I look forward to it and am glad that the politicians that represent me have decided to do it.

Really - why are you so negative about it.
