I believe it's because if we don't visit Pluto now it will be even further away than it is now for a couple hundred years and we need to get to Pluto before it's atmosphere freezes out.
Besides it is a planetary mission and Pluto will complete the planets visited in the solar system. Combine that with a visit to Pluto's could be relatives and we have a winner. ;-)
