Impact Risk Table Getting Worse

JPL's NEO Risk Table

2004 VD17's risk has risen considerably based on November observations to surpass Apophis (MN04) and it's bigger. We've started 2006 by adding 2 new asteroids just under Apophis in risk with potential impacts as early as 2008 and 2010 giving us little time to prepare if risk level goes up. One of them is definitely of potential global impact with an estimated diameter of 1.8 km. One added at end of 2005 initialy has 1,111 potential impacts as early as 2009, but more observations have reduced potential impacts to 111 no earlier than 2028.

I'm definitely for early adoption of a new heavy lift launcher to increase our options for dealing with potential impactors and human exploration of space.

Mark
