Same with Police Officers . . .

I think this should be aimed at academia, not teachers in particular. Many are paid by the institution they work for, such as professors -- though not all, and those that do get kickbacks as well, perhaps in campus housing or local school-supported discounts -- an institution which also claims a number of tax breaks.
It is the idea that our tax-supported government should extend a modicum of this same support to certain fields of occupation that seems to rile you, but these are the fields that are basically non-profit (not counting the ivy-league quarterback factories). How would you like to pay for school, for road and bridge repairs, for you police department. Well, we all do, through this same taxation.
Some things need our support, and taxing seems the best way to achieve this. The failing is not that they live on tax-monies; so much as the designers of these institutions fail to represent the community they are supposedly working so hard to support. Some bridges still collapse, some police officers are still on the take, some teachers still fail to educate.
No, the only real blight on our well-being is that we all still need money to survive.
