"I do not know why this is an issue- If you decide that Pluto and UB313 are not planets then you still have to come up with another name for all the large bodies in our solar system."
- Exactly, 'they' will have to come up with a clarification/classification of what these bodies are, BUT, IMHO, (and some others from past discussions.... years back), Pluto is not a planet or 'no longer a planet', since it 'seems' that it is a member of the icy Edgeworth-Kuiper Belt system. Hopefully, New Horizons will make a final and definitely more accurate assertion of that (good grief, we have to wait until at least 2015). Regardless or size, it's the geological make-up of these bodies/planetoids that differentiates them from the gaseus and rocky planets.
"If you define a 'Planet' as a body orbiting the sun with enough gravity that it has assumed a spherical shape, then Pluto and UB313 are planets."
--- But, then, so are the members of the Kuiper Belt that we're finding... they are all 'spherical', but icy/cometoids by nature. But then, some 'moons' are not spherical or even natural moons as in the case of Mars, Saturn....
--- I understand what's behind a name. Give it a name for status, but classify it for what it is.

re: I really don't understand the debate... It's simple, really (imho).
