More countries seem to be getting drawn into conflict with Islamic fundamentalists

In May 1911, ten men in Serbia formed the Black Hand Secret Society. Early members included Colonel Dragutin Dimitrijevic, the chief of the Intelligence Department.

The main objective of the Black Hand was the creation, by means of violence, of a Greater Serbia. Its stated aim was: "To realize the national ideal, the unification of all Serbs. This organisation prefers terrorist action to cultural activities; it will therefore remain secret."

This terrorist group grew until it had about 2500 members, mostly military. When the government failed to arrest them, they assassinated Archduke Ferdinand. When the government failed to extradite them, World War I began.

There is a strong parallel with Al-Quaeda. They also reached a membership of a few thousand, were harbored by a foreign government who refused to extradite the leaders for their crimes. The initial war seems to be over with the fall of the Taliban.

But World War I was a double whammy. It was quickly followed by WWII. I'm not a history expert but somehow the second world war was related to the first, was it not? The victory over the Taliban did not stop terrorist attacks worldwide. And as my subject line says, IMO, more countries seem to be getting drawn into conflict with Islamic fundamentalists. If there is a war, more countries will therefore be involved, which is by definition, movement toward global conflict.

The most recent story being hyped by new media are the protests by Muslims over a bunch of doodles. Political satire is one of the best forms of political criticism by people in democratic countries. It is a basic freedom of speech, the right to call our leadership on their screwups. If we can't do that, then we aren't free. If religious belief trumps the right to call our leaders on flawed policy, then different opinions cannot be weighed. People will be forced to listen to only one perspective. People won't learn.

Will we be forced to round up muslims and deport them by the millions? Will there be a war between migrating populations and established ones? There is an historical parallel in Serbia when the Ottoman Empire, mostly muslim, forced conversions of orthodox christian serbs via taxes. Eventually communist rule suppressed all religion, but in the last decade old religions have again been freed there. The result was the Serbo-Croatian war, genocide, war crimes, etc. What are we going to see worldwide now that western democracy is being put to the test by migrating muslim populations?
