The debt ceiling was going to hit the bar back around May.
The Treasury books have been somehow cooked since then to hold the debt level at exactly $16.699396 trillion--a sliver of exactly $25 million below the legal ceiling--that whole time. Look it up on their monthly statements. Now the cork's been taken out so the ceiling would have to get raised this month.
