The UN put its foot into it again with this absurd report.
Last Updated Thu, 16 Feb 2006 09:50:07 EST CBC News American authorities should release all prisoners in the U.S. detention centre in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, or try them in court and shut down the prison, the United Nations said in a report released Thursday. The report's five authors urge the United States "to close down the Guantanamo Bay detention centre and to refrain from any practice amounting to torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment." But Kevin Moley, U.S. ambassador to UN offices in Geneva, offered little hope that his country would follow the recommendations. He said the investigation had not taken into account evidence provided by the United States, and that the five UN experts rejected an invitation to visit Guantanamo. "It is particularly unfortunate that the special rapporteurs rejected the invitation and that their unedited report does not reflect the direct, personal knowledge that this visit would have provided," Moley wrote at the end of the report. The UN investigators said they refused the invitation because U.S. authorities would not let them interview prisoners. "We're independent human rights experts, not tourists," one of the report's authors, Paul Hunt, told CBC News. Hunt is a professor at the University of Essex in the United Kingdom, and an expert on physical and mental health. The authors based their findings on interviews with former prisoners, public documents, media reports, lawyers and a questionnaire filled out by the U.S. government.

The reason why the USA refused to permit the interview of prisoners is so obvious that even Leftists might be able to figure it out.
