NASA has done quite well with robotic missions. Since Apollo, NASA has managed to orbit the Earth time after time, never venturing into cislunar space and has fried 2 entire shuttle crews while spending hundreds of billions repeating Skylab and Apollo LEO time and again. An abyssmal record unless you're compelled to rationalize.
