I remember when that happened. I was working at Hughes at the time. I was in a conference room watching the launch, as it was the first time we were allowed to watch a Chinese rocket launch one of our satellites. I recall seeing it take off at an odd angle and that it failed but didn’t hear till much later that it landed on a near by village. A few months later we received back some of our units that were on the satellite. I was surprised at what good shape they were in. I think we could have made some repairs and they might have worked again, though of course we couldn’t have ever used them again. That was a long time ago, probably back in the early or mid 1990s. Hughes got into trouble because we, in a small way, helped the Chinese find out what went wrong. Basically we just told them to do a better job of soldering. For that Hughes was panelized for exporting technology to a foreign government.
