Graphs and Statistics- the horror

"Civil War? What Civil War?

So with all the doom and gloom on the news, I was looking forward to the Brookings report to see what was really going on.

In February, US soldiers killed in action or wounded has gone down for the 4th straight month in a row."

So says The Opinionated Bastard:

In comment section poster JorgXMckie:
"Iraq has a population less than 10% of the US. Your graph shows a lower bound estimate of 200-300 civilians killed per month, which would be equivalent to 2000-3000 civilians killed in the US per month. One 9/11 per month. Every month.

And you think that’s a big yawn for you?"

Of course no one mentions yawning. Also no one should yawn at say the 40,000 Americans that die each year from car accidents [around 3,000 per month]. Of course this is not same as death cause by terrorists attacking American civilians. But then again it's not the total mortality, either. Statistics can give a pretty distorted view depending upon what you measure and how you measure. But they can give a fairly good view of trends if you use a constant way measuring.
