speaking of getting within Mercury's orbit - a nearby planet apparently can change an object's trajectory from parabolic to hyperbolic (possibly even elliptical to hyperbolic) .. so I wonder if any of the inner planets could assist here in ways to optimize the eventual angular momentum transfer about the Sun.
