State of the Union Address Bush Outlined the Advanced Energy Initiative

The President has set a national goal of replacing more than 75% of our oil imports from the Middle East by 2025.

The Administration will accelerate research in cutting-edge methods of producing "cellulosic ethanol" with the goal of making the use of such ethanol practical and competitive within 6 years.

Research scientists say that accelerating research into "cellulosic ethanol" can make it cost-competitive by 2012, offering the potential to displace up to 30% of the Nation's current fuel use.

There are an estimated 250 million vehicles on America's highways, and Americans will purchase more than 17 million vehicles this year. It will take approximately 15 years to switch America's automobiles over to more fuel efficient technologies.

There is one more technology that can reduce fuel consumption in cars that is being overlooked: smaller, lighter cars. It is far easier to reduce vehicle weight than to increase engine efficiency. Making 1-seat cars instead of 4-seat cars could reduce vehicle weight by 75 percent. If ethanol is raised to 30 percent of fuel consumed, then 1-seat vehicles would eliminate the remainder, ie. foreign oil. And no matter what engine is used, hydrogen fuel cell for example, it is more likely to be introduced into a small car first because it will be more affordable.
