Born wild, made civilized. Good or bad depends on the civilization.

We typically use "civilized" as a synonym for "good", but it ain't necessarily so. When civilizations are humane, I believe the overall influence is for good, though not always for enlightened or logical. But that would be my liberal philosophy showing, and my Western upbringing, which values the individual more highly than many civilizations do.

If you think about the Chinese in all their historical grandeur, one might not say that their people are made good by their society, but one can't say bad either. China has a long history of not recognizing individuals as inherently valuable, but of assessing value of individuals according to the value they bring to their communities: family, clan, and so on. As with many civilizations, its treatment of the female gender as property has been dreadful, something of great interest to me as a member of that gender. Yet Chinese civilization has given us great public works, great art, and great political achievements, as well as giving its people (on the whole) the means and the security to live even though their individual lives have not been valued in a way we as Westerners appreciate. So is that "good" or "bad"? Or do we really have the equipment to make that decision?
