I believe the most exciting time for manned space interested folks is...behind us and were those 12 years between Sputnik and Apollo 11.
The frustrations, the discoveries, the daring and the achievement!
Nothing can compare anymore with the first moon landing.
It didn't need to have an economic, military or scientific justification, but it was still accepted because it had never been done before.

Returning back there or landing on the first asteroid or on Mars won't have the same romantic charm as the first time humans landed on another world.
