Saw something similar once...

I watched a fellow take the lens off a very nice 35mm camera and try to use canned air to blow the dust off the mirror. Hoping, apparently, to clean out every last corner, he began gently shaking the can as he sprayed.

Big mistake. A nasty blast of freon jetted into the camera, and he must have spent the next 20 minutes trying to wipe out the residue.

Of course the mirror in most SLR's is front-silvered and so the less actual physical contact it experiences, the better. Judging from the fairly grim look on his face as he gave up, I'd say he probably scratched the bejezus out of that mirror.

The kicker is that it wasn't his camera. He was a salesperson (not me!) in a photo store who was trying to help a customer (not me either!) who came in to see if they could get the dust out of his eyepeice.
