Hope, denial, humor help residents cope with life above Hayward Fault
Don'tcha think that if these folks insist upon living here, that they be on their own? It's gonna go to hell, it is going to hell, and they are choosing to stay. Is it reasonable to expect the Feds to bail them out when there is a catastrophic earthquake?
I think that when someone insists on blindfolding themselves and walking across a busy highway, the ERs in the area would be better treating hangnails than them.
Like living in a floodplain and not having insurance. Tough.
Personally, in the event of a catastrophic quake I'd call out the National Guard and cordon off the entire area until the folks inside had rehabilitated it well enough to rejoin civilization. Until then, cards and letters only.
