I need advice on Trojans (in the spirit of off color subject lines)

I have been bad about using anti-virus software...

I just shelled out some cash and got updated, I did a scan and found 37 items... all but one were cookies... the one that Really worried me was identified as a trojan that supposedly allows hackers to use my computer to do anything they want... it was called 'Portal of Doom'... the info on it is here: http://www.spywareguide.com/product_show.php?id=680

Does the fact that I had this trojan mean that my computer has been accessed by a hacker? Or am I just one of millions infected but not invaded?
