Birds of a feather flock together

Birds. Not really stupid unless compared to some mammals. They eat like birds, very energy efficient. They can fly to avoid predators, to negate the need for mechanized transport, and migrate to avoid seasonal weather extremes. They have sex more than any other animal, and so don't deny themselves. They reproduce annually, and so can advolve very quickly to conform to regional food supplies. They can fly, float, dive, walk, hop, stand on one foot. They are millions of years more evolved than dinosaurs, who once gorged themselves on the Earth's resources and dominated every other species.

Some have ferromagnetic material in their skulls. They can sense the Earth's magnetic field. They collectively decide when to migrate. Not gradually. All of them lift off and fly at the same moment. They collectively decide which direction to go as well.

Are we seeing dumb birds acting on instinct, or are we seeing networked intelligence? Dumb birds as self-reproducing components of a smarter emergent network? Maybe it's primitive, and not much better than a pocket calculator, but could it be more.....?
