No way is Vega the 5th brightest star in the universe. Far from it by several orders of magnitude. There was a great article in Sky & Telescope on this. When they realized we were seeing Vega's less brilliant ploe from Earth it explained the brightness anomally. Vega is a normal A type main sequence star.
