We all know that in recent years Orson Scott Card has come out of the closet as a particularly rabid and hate-filled homophobe, and that's generating a bit of controversy around the film. It's been reported that Card won't see any money from the movie, having sold off the film rights long ago (no percentage? Could he sue his agent for malpractice?), so (if true) he won't materially benefit from anyone seeing the movie, nor will a boycott affect him.
Not discussed so much, yet it seems to bother me more, is his equally rabid political bigotry. It hit me in the face when I read his 2006 novel "Empire", about a liberal military coup in America. Cause yeah, that's how we pacifists and peaceniks roll. And we all know how the military is populated almost exclusively by liberals. I could have just written it off as just an implausibly bad story if it weren't for his afterword, which started out positively on the theme of "why can't we all get along?", but unfortunately, he answered his own question: It's all those damn fascist liberals, that's why. Really rubbed my nose in his political beliefs, which turned out to be as vile as his homophobia.
Anybody else weighing the morality of showing any support whatsoever for that evil son of a bitch Orson Scott Card?
