Well, I think some people understand, obviously. But to try answer your question, most people don't understand why we should explore space. Or in other words most people at NASA don't know what their job is. If they understand this:
"As I see it, questions about the vision boil down to whether we want to incorporate the solar system in our economic sphere, or not. "
They do understand.
