Because space is a new medium, words had to follow and quite often, they don't really match what they mean.
Also, there are differences between languages.
For instance:
A spacewalk....
When an astronaut leaves his spacecraft in space, we call it a spacewalk....But he doesn't walk, he doesn't use his legs and feet (except to remain stable on the crane, precisely NOT walkung!)....So what word is more appropriate? To float, to swim (but there is no sea un space),to glide (nothing to glide on) or to hover? (spacehover???....brrr;)
In french, docking is translated into "amarrer" (to moor) or "arrimer" (to stow) or "accoupler" (to mate)...some say the third is the most appropriate...But to dock, is it the best word even in english? There is no consensus in french anyway.
Astre in french can best be translated as "celestial body" as there is no equivalent in english. There, as frenchspeakers, we have an advantage!
