Bush speech on immigration
It would be putting it mildly to say I don't have the highest hopes for this speech.
John Derbyshire puts it this way:
I shall run screaming from the room if the President utters any of the following words or phrases:
jobs Americans won't do
nation of immigrants
compassionate
family values don't stop at the Rio Grande
good-hearted people
path to citizenship
my good friend Vicente Fox
this is not amnesty
Others would add the term "virtual fence." When the barriers around the White House and Capitol Building are torn down and replaced with a "virtual fence," get back to me on that.
A lot of Americans want to see, right now, some serious enforcement of immigration laws, a workable barrier at the border, and some actual prosecution of employers who violate the laws.
When the inflow is controlled again, we can start working on how to deal with those who are here, and neither full amnesty or full deportation are workable answers.
