Dr. Goebbels was defintely the master propagandist and spinmeister of evil extraordinaire.
Funny thing about the word "propaganda", in English
(or at least American English), the word has extremely negative connotations. It is pretty much synonymous with deliberate lies, specifically, in a political context, designed to confuse, persuade, obfuscate, mislead, etc. In Spanish, "propaganda" (spelled the same way, from the Latin root meaning " to propagate", or spread around) is a more gentle term closer to "advertising" or "information". The Roman Catholiic Church uses the word for its own publicity and information services, so obviously that perjorative connotation is not present in Italian. Many European countries have public and official Ministries of Propaganda, so the word obviously has a different meaning for them than it does for us.
It's funny that we don't use the word, although we certainly employ the concept. We have press secretaries, public relations, public information, and we spend collossal amounts of money on advertising for commercial purposes. But we don't employ propaganda. That's a foreign word, only foreigners do it.
