Australia is actually mostly a sun-baked desert with some decent habitable areas around the perimeter. If anyplace was tailor-made for massive solar power plants, Australia would be it.
Nuclear plants would provide 24 hour power, and are a good idea, but solar should definitely be part of the solution in that part of the world.
