Well, that was about a year's worth of logs, so perhaps "a few months" was a bit tongue-in-cheek. Size of post has no effect on the log file--one line in the log for each post, no more, no less; so it's not so much the verbosity as the frequency that fills up logs.

I opened up yesterday's Zone log file, and harvested some statistical tidbits:

45,424 hits in 24 hours. A "hit" is every transaction, each request for a page plus each request for the graphics on the page and some associated files. Of those hits, 17,553 were for Web pages, mostly message pages. At that rate, the Zone's getting about 6.4 million page views/year.

About 1/5 of the hits came from search spiders. Yahoo's "Slurp!" came through yesterday and accounted for most of those hits. We were also spidered yesterday by LookSmart, OpenIntelligenceData, Gigabot, BaiDu, MSN, Voila, and Ask Jeeves.

There were 286 posts yesterday.
