STROMATOLITES CONFIRMED AS ANCIENT FOSSILS (Science Show: 10/06/2006)

Abigail Allwood, a PhD student from Macquarie University has confirmed that
stromatolites, the strange round structures around the West Australian
coast, were formed as a result of biological processes. The structures have
been dated to 3.43 billion years and are amongst the oldest evidence of life
on Earth.

ANALYSING ANCIENT MOLECULES (Science Show: 10/06/2006)

Dr Peggy Ostrom at Michigan State University uses high-tech tools to analyse
the proteins of fossils. The sequencing and biochemistry of the molecules
tells her much about the history of ancient creatures. Her latest research
subject is a 42,000 year-old horse.
