Most of the reason you use Helium is the handling here not in route and on Mars.

And Mars does has some atmospheric oxygen.

Those German Mars Society guys have carefully thought this all out. If you care to ask them why they chose Helium or discussion with them any of their design rational some of them will be at the Mars Society Conference this August giving a report.
