One historian I read mentioned how motives in this sort of patriotic war sometimes get twisted for later historical consumption. He mentioned that the Boston Tea Party was not caused by the British tax on tea, but by the British eliminating the tea tax, which had proven impossible to collect. The ships in the harbor were a threat to local smugglers who had been selling untaxed tea at a great profit. The patriots who attacked the ships were smugglers and merchants who were determined to keep the price high.
