Kauai, a short overview

A nice little island, with some real surprises for such a small place. We stayed at a TrendWest place on the south coast, about thirty feet from the beach. Very nice.

Kauai contains a huge and scenic "Grand Canyon" in the center, something I had never heard of before I went there. It's worth a day trip, or at least a drive. The island's interior is beautiful.

We tried the helicopter ride, and it's a great way to see the scenery, but my stomach doesn't like small aircraft, and while I didn't get sick, I was glad the ride was only one hour. My adventure with the riptide was documented sometime earlier here.

The place is covered with gorgeously colored chickens, the descendants of those that escaped after a hurricane some years back. You can't throw a rock without hitting a wild chicken.

Did a short kayak trip up one of the rivers. Also nice for an afternoon. We rented snorkeling equipment, but never got around to using it. (I got railroaded into a snorkel trip on my later Maui trip, and I survived it, but I don't like small boats any more than small planes, and the ocean tastes terrible.)

There's a lot of really nice scenery on the north side of the island. A road runs almost all the way around the perimeter. The west side is accessible only by hiking, or by taking a boat trip around.

Everything else you could find on the internet. I'm probably not the best source of advice on this, because I'm not really the adventurous type.

I'm actually wearing my Kauai "Red Dirt" shirt today.
