More specific musings

Re your initial comment on my quoted remarks, I think you spoke a little hastily. I never addressed the intrinsic value of anything, I spoke of the ability of the wealthy person to have several qualities which allow him to produce the market value of what he sells. It's sort of the way sexual selection works, birds of paradise don't necessarily have better survival equipment, they just attract mates more effectively, and that is all evolution requires in their environment. It can be argued that the individual who can get rich selling something like pet rocks must have something going for him that the brave and competent fireman who can barely pay his bills does. That has to do with the whims of the market. I did not address markets at all, but I certainly implied that those who are successful in them must have certain qualities or properties which those who aren't successful lack. The corollary I mentioned was somewhat ironic, but not completely so.

For example, what is "objective value", anyway. Value is defined by the market. Even market apologists recognize that some aberrations occur, but they argue, with some authority, that they are just that, aberrations. Again, that is irrelevant, my rap was neither a defense nor an attack on markets, it had to do with the distribution of wealth, and why isn't it Gaussian when all the human characteristics which determine it, no matter how you define it, are. My only direct evidence is historical, that those societies which we tend to consider more equitable and advanced seem to have more bell-like wealth distributions, and that the historical trend seems to be in that direction.
If anything, it is evidence that capitalism works.

Your comments on Bill and Marie bear this out. I think the former has a lot more going for him than the latter, not only that, his success has also benefited many others, and not just from his charity work, either. His salaries and the value of his products have moved a lot of folks towards the mean of the curve. And as another great captain of industry once pointed out, "That's a good thing.".
