"That time of year thou may'st in me behold,

Believe me, Tech. I believe every word of it. Of course, the details are all bullshit, but I understand you are speaking in metaphors and what you're saying has the ring of truth to it, even as there is in the Bible or Shakespeare or Homer, even if you don't believe the actual fairy stories that are being presented on the surface.

J.B.S. Haldane once said "The universe is not just queerer than we think, it's queerer than we CAN think." The question is how do we derive a universe of infinite possibilities from a finite number of quantum states? It's like writing a poem. Try blank verse, no rhyme or meter, and it tells you nothing new even though you have infinite freedom to create. At best it sounds like prose, sheer information transfer and not much else. But impose on yourself some structure, like an Elizabethan sonnet; first, 12 lines of iambic pentameter parsed so that each four line stanza is matched so that the first and third and second and fourth rhyme. Follow the whole thing up with a heroic couplet to provide the resolution. A rigid, unforgiving structure, right? By forcing yourself to work within the limits of the pattern the content is distilled and magnified and the poem communicates with a power to penetrate thought as profound as real analysis penetrates mechanics.

Or how about the classical Spanish décima, ten lines of eight syllables each; the rhyme scheme ABBAACCDDC? Again the structure makes you think, it disciplines your thought and what often emerges from your mind is something totally unexpected but very often delightful. Illiterate Cuban peasants centuries ago set the décima to music, making up the complex lines as they went along in a folk art form called the controversia. Usually a man and a woman engage in mock verbal combat, stopping every few lines to do a little picking on their guitars to give them time to compose the next few verses in their heads so they can sing them in a stylized nasal twang, not too different from our own bluegrass. The themes are usually comic and domestic ("Oh woman, you treat me so mean, my dinner's never ready when I come home" , "Husband you're lazy, you drink to much and you're always broke"). That sort of thing, improvising the lines as they go along, trying to trip each other up while coming up with more and more outrageous stories and improbable situations. But it's always done within the rigid structure of the verse, and the poems they spin vanish in the telling, because no one writes them down. High structure existing for a few moments until it dissolves back into the white noise of the cosmos.

I'm not trying to teach a course in comparative poetics here, I'm trying to make a point that complexity is created, and it is simultaneously ephemeral and eternal, and it is associated with intelligence in ways which we don't fully understand but which we can sense and intuit and explore in a variety of ways, which is what you were trying to tell me.

In a universe of infinite possibilities, the laws of physics provide the rhyme and the meter that magnifies and distills the contant of human experience. It is our direct connection to the Big Bang, the Quantum foam, the Cosmic Background.

I learned a phrase during the years I studied physics which comes to mind: "That which is not forbidden, is mandatory."
