I was dead right

You're right, but I believe both I and the Norsk skipper behaved in a prudent, seamanlike fashion, maintaining a proper lookout and moderate speed and equipped for sailing under those circumstances given the applicable USCG regulations appropriate to our craft and conditions. By law, my boat was not required to carry any lights or noisemakers, but I carried both. He was lit up as appropriate to a vessel of his size.

There are exceptions to the "sail always has the ROW" rule" The sailing skipper is obliged to consider the ability to maneuver safely of the powered vessel, and to yield that ROW when required. Due to the poor visibility and light winds, my maneuver options were limited.

If my encounter had been with the typical ski boat or sport fisherman, I probably would have been history. OTOH, those clowns usually don't go anywhere in a fog, and when caught unexpectedly in one, lack the ability to deal with it. I will post at some future time about another fogbound adventure I had which will illustrate some of the follies of the average recreational boater when faced with a typical Florida pea souper.
