The Israeli attack on the Khyam UN post was not an accident. It was either a deliberate decision or it was gross incompetence. If this attack was delibeate the Israeli army should be utterly abject. If it was incompetence they should look to the UN peacekeepers to learn how real soldiers behave under pressure.
One of the UN officers killed by the Israelis is Canadian. His name is Major Paeta Hess-von Kruedener. The other officers were from China, Finland and Austria. They were very brave men doing an extraordinarily dangerous job. The Israeli attack was relentless and irresponsible. Repeated attempts were made by the UN forces on the ground to halt this attack, including calls by Lt.-Col. John Molloy (irish military) and Maj.-Gen. Alain Pellegrini (France) who is in charge of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).When radio contact was lost with the Khyam post Indian peacekeepers were sent to assess the situation. They were shelled by the Israeli army. Was this also by accident?
There has been a UN presence in this region since 1972, including many Irish troops (30,000 troops, 47 casualties). The UN has lost 262 people on this mission. In 1996 an Israeli bomb killed over 100 civilians who had taken shelter at a UN post.

Hezbollah missiles are no excuse, two wrongs do not make a right.
The men and women from around the world who staff this dangerous UN outpost should be given the highest possible honour.
