Active vision
During the middle ages, there was a big debate as to whether vision was the result of light entering the eye from surrounding objects, or whether the eyes emitted something that reached out and sensed objects, sort of like radar.
The debate was finally settled when someone pointed out "When you stare at the sun, it's your eyes that hurt."
