The Matrix wasn't there first...
Daniel F. Galouye's 70's novel, "Simulacron III", first pioneered this universe simulation concept, and much more effectively and convincingly than the Matrix.
The book was later made into the film, "The Thirteenth Floor", starring the very real Gretchen Moll.
(OK, so she's the only one in the cast I can remember!).
