re: Forcing something on somebody is never good

If I ran a school, I would have no problem with veils (actually, I think we're talking mostly head coverings, not veils), crosses around necks, those little cloth head wraps Sikh kids wear to our schools, yarmulkes, or anything else. Out in the real world, away from the ACLU psychoses, these things do little or no harm, and in my opinion, allow opportunities for some cross-cultural education for the kids.

There are limits to cultural tolerance, particularly when a culture claims the right to enslave and abuse, but these particular examples aren't there yet.

Where this gets a bit touchy is that we are dealing with a culture whose extremists would never be tolerant at all. The saddest thing I ever read was some European minister declaring that if (paraphrased) "we are tolerant of Muslims now, they will be tolerant of us when we are a minority."

Such tolerance is quite rare in Muslim nations.
