I think they should rev up the rover at top speed and have it try to
leap the crater! Maybe they can even have it take photos as it sails
across to the other side.
If they need a ramp to get some altitude, they can make one out of
the dirt by having Opportunity push the surface dust around with its
mechanical arm and pat it down for solidity.
Wouldn't that be just wicked awesome?!
And even if it crashes - which I seriously doubt, 'cause it's got 6
wheels after all and the solar panels would probably make good
glider wings - at least the rover will have gone out in a blaze of
glory for the good of science and entertainment, rather than
slowly failing instrument by instrument and wheel by wheel to
end its otherwise glorious days rusting away on some unnamed
dune. Heroes - even mechanical ones - deserve better fates
than that.
